Jamaica to ban all foreign poultry

27-02-2007 | | |

It has been suggested that all kinds of international poultry be banned from entering Caribbean markets.

The suggestion came from Senator Norman Grant of the Jamaica Agricultural Society. With the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) poultry industry estimated at over US$468 million per year, producing over 200 mt of broiler meat and 45 million dozen eggs, Grant said that the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) represents an excellent opportunity for players and stakeholders in the poultry industry to come together and make their presence felt on a regional level.
He said his proposition was not “anti-international trade” but for local and regional advancement. He added that developed countries at some stage in their process of development did it and urged that as one, Caribbean poultry farmers could do the same to create a better life for themselves, their prospective countries and the region.
