20,000 birds die in Canadian poultry farm fire

About 20,000 birds have died in a fire at a poultry farm close to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

An early morning fire at a poultry farm destroyed a barn with the chicks inside. The structure was some 40 metres long and about 10 metres wide. Birds had been added to the barn just earlier that week.

The local fire chief said the chickens likely perished inside the building well before fire crews arrived as there were no injured birds noticed when the fire trucks got to the scene. The fire was called in by a passer by who saw the flames.
No people were hurt, but the damages to the business are significant. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
