500,000 layers die in Colorado blaze
The Boulder Valley Poultry egg farm in Boulder, Colorado USA, was the scene of a blaze Monday that destroyed three farm buildings and claimed the lives of 500,000 layers, according to local reports.
The loss represents an eighth of the state of Colorado’s egg production.
The farm, near Roggen, Colorado, boasted nearly 1 million hens prior to the fire, and produced 25% of the eggs sold in the state. The recent loss in hens represents a production shortfall of 250,000 eggs a day.
Jerry Wilkins, president of the Colorado Egg Producers Association, said the influence of the fire on egg price is expected to be minimal, given that other local egg producers have agreed to step up production, and that in this season egg demand usually low.
