Switzerland: Poultry consumption increasing
In Switzerland, approx. 417,330 tonnes of meat was consumed in 2008, which is more than 53 kg per inhabitant.
The overall amount was 3% more than in 2007 and increased for the 4th consecutive year, stated Proviande, the Swiss meat association.
Pork was the most popular meat, with 196,000 tonnes being sold. This was followed by beef (88,000 tonnes) and poultry (85,000 tonnes).
In the previous year, consumption was highest in chickens and cows, which increased by 7.3% and 5.8%, respectively. Demand was slightly lower for veal, lamb and pork meats.
Most of the meat was produced locally, with 90% of pork, 80% of beef and 50% of poultry coming from Switzerland, according to Proviande.
