Students call on Nigeria's governement to stop poultry smuggling
Agricultural Science students at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, have called on the Nigerian government to stop the smuggling of poultry products into the country, the Nigerian Tribune reports.
They state that the continuous illegal importation of the poultry products would have a long term effect on the economy of the nation, as well as posing a significant health risk, given that the illegality of importation has as a consequence that the products also evade health and safety inspections.
"Nigeria borders are too porous to importation of poultry products such as frozen chicken and turkey, egg powdered, hatchable eggs, among others.
"We have observed that most of these poultry products are not hygienically prepared and preserved. What do you expect from foods that are illegally imported into the country," Mukail, a student spokesman said.
The students' have appealed the Nigerian public to stop buying illegal poultry products, out of awareness for their own safety.
