Russia to lift ban on US poultry

28-06-2010 | | |

Russia has agreed to lift its long-running ban on US poultry over the use of chlorine for pathogen reduction, President Barack Obama said at a joint press conference with President Dmitry Medvedev.

According to US trade officials, the 2 sides have signed a letter to resume exports of US poultry not treated with chlorine, and included 3 alternative pathogen-reduction treatments (PRTs) – cetylpyridinium chloride (sold under the Cecure brand), hydrogen peroxide and peroxyacetic acid.

The agreement will require a new letterhead certificate with verification from the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) that PRTs used by the processing company are on the approved list.

It is still unclear if existing inventory will be eligible for export under the new agreement.
