Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI), identified as sub-type H5, has been reported on an organic poultry farm in Northern Germany.

A report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) states that 1,522 birds have been destroyed on the poultry farm located in Schleswig-Holstein. The affected animals, 1,200 laying hens and over 300 geese were destroyed as a precautionary measure.

Control measures have been applied to the area including disinfection, zoning and quarantine.

It is thought that the virus originated from wild geese as the previous occurrence of bird flu in Germany was in August 2011.

In response to the outbreak Hong Kong has suspended imports of all poultry products from Schleswig-Holstein.
