Up to 4,000 laying birds have been culled following an outbreak of Newcastle Disease on a poultry farm in Sweden.

The causal agent for the outbreak in Kalmar County in the south of the country has been identified as avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) but the source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

Protection zone put in place

A rise in egg drops and eggs without shells were noticed with 1,600 of the 4,000 birds affected. No increase in mortality was seen on the farm.

The World Organisation for Animal Health said that a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone had been put in place around the infected farm.
