Illegal poultry trade barrier imposed by Honduras and El Salvador
According to an alert circulated by the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council, the Governments of Honduras and El Salvador have imposed blatantly protective barriers against imported chicken meat.
This is evidently contrary to the letter and intent of the recently concluded Central American Free Trade Agreement.
A new regulation imposes a zero tolerance for Salmonella on imported products.
The governments of the two nations now require all imported poultry products to be cooked to a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes.
The new regulations conflict with the principle of selectively discriminating against pathogens on imported products when the same infections are present in flocks or on products of the importing nation. (ss)
