License suspended over suspected smuggled poultry
US officials have suspended the license of a Michigan poultry wholesaler who is suspected of selling illegally smuggled Chinese poultry to Asian restaurants and grocery stores in southeast Michigan since early June.
Michigan Department of Agriculture Director Mitch Irwin said the action effectively shut down operations of the Tinsway Company, on East Maple Road in Troy, where state and federal inspectors found incorrectly labelled poultry that may be from areas of China where avian flu is present.
Irwin said state and county inspectors are inspecting 65 Asian grocery stores and 35 Chinese restaurants.
