Pakistan’s health ministry calls for poultry price reduction

04-08-2006 | |

Pakistan’s ministry of health has requested that the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) take immediate steps to reduce poultry prices and to bring it back within reach of the ordinary people.

Following the ministry’s request the PPA met and decided that association representatives, traders and the district government would supervise the daily auction of poultry at Tollinton Market, Lahore. An average price would be set, to which Rs5 would be added for the retailers. Plus, a rate list would also be issued.

Poultry prices in Pakistan have risen dramatically recently due to an outbreak of bird flu (avian influenza). The outbreak resulted in the closure of about 40% of the country’s poultry farms and Rs10 billion (€1=Rs77) in losses.
