EU hints at banning pork, poultry from Brazil
Brazil should improve its controls on food safety – otherwise it could risk European import bans, said EU commissioner Markos Kyprianou yesterday in the European Parliament.
Although Kyprianou said that there are no direct threats for human health, he added that the deficiencies in Brazilian procedures are so big that sanctions are considered in case the situation does not improve before the end of the year.
Seven times
In the last three years, European inspectors checked the Brazilian situation seven times. The control system proved still to have many deficiencies – mainly they are administrative, but the inspectors also found frail communication lines between vets and several control agencies.
Irish and British farmers have been urging the European Commission (EC) to ban meat from Brazil.
Kyprianou said for now, this is not necessary, but he agreed the EU should continue carrying out checks. For that reason, new EU expert journeys to Brazil are planned for next month.
