H5N1 bird flu: Romania and Saudi Arabia struggling
An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has been reported by Romanian veterinary officials in backyard poultry at a town in the Danube delta.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s agriculture ministry has announced a new bird flu outbreak at an egg farm in a town south of the countr’s capital, Riyadh.
According to a World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) report, the Romanian avian influenza outbreak – the first since June 2006 – was discovered at a small farm near Tulcea town in the eastern Danube delta. Te virus killed 31 birds in a flock of hens and ducks. The remaining 49 birds were destroyed.
In Saudi Arabia, officials reported that the country’s latest H5N1 outbreak occurred at an egg production facility south of Riyadh, where all 216,000 birds will be culled. This is confirmed by the ministry to be the 14th H5N1 outbreak in the country.
