H5N1 poultry virus confirmed in Hong Kong
The government has confirmed that a sick egret recently discovered in Hong Kong has tested positive for the virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu.
The bird, which was found in a park, was confirmed to have had avian influenza virus after several laboratory tests were conducted, said the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Hong Kong has remained free of bird flu in recent months, partly due to aggressive monitoring of the disease, which is due to the fact that the first documented cases of the disease in humans occurred in the territory.
