3 million broilers fed contaminated feed
Up to 3 million broiler chickens were fed melamine-tainted pet food and were then sold on the US market beginning in early February, US health officials said.
The contaminated pet food product made its way into poultry feed at 38 Indiana farms, of which 30 produced broiler chickens destined for restaurants and supermarkets, according to officials at the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Department of Agriculture.
The feed was contaminated with wheat gluten imported from China that has been linked to poisoned pet food.
Approximately 2.5 – 3 million chickens fed melamine-tainted pet food have already been sold.
The FDA and USDA believe it is unlikely that anyone who ate the chicken in question will become ill, however, the government will not give its seal of approval to any products derived from animals that ate the contaminated feed. The government is also offering to pay farmers who euthanize poultry that ate the bad feed.
