China confirms bird flu outbreak

A H5N1 bird flu outbreak killing some 11,172 birds in China the central province of Hunan has been confirmed. There are no reported cases of human infection.

With millions of backyard birds and a strained medical system, China has battled against bird flu for some time, with the most recent outbreak occurring in Tibet in March 2007.

Hunan authorities have taken steps to contain the outbreak, culling close to 53,000 other birds.
