Six people have been detained after trying to smuggle chickens and ducks out of a remote region in north-eastern India following an outbreak of bird flu.

“We have come across many reports of people loading their poultry into vans and other modes of transport and shifting them to other places to escape culling,” K Gopal, officer of the Animal Disease Control Programme.
After federal authorities confirmed dead chickens had tested positive for bird flu, the Indian government banned the sale of poultry.
“Anybody found violating the ban on sale or purchase of chicken or transporting birds would be dealt with firmly,” said an official, saying that the six people from near Chenngmeirong violating this were taken into custody on Friday.
