Peru: Newcastle Disease in fighting cocks
A velogenic strain of Newcastle Disease has been detected in a flock of fighting cocks in Ayacucho, San Miguel area, Peru.
A total of 50 fighting cocks have been found positive with a velogenic strain of Newcastle Disease in the Peruvian town of Ayacucho. Already 30 birds had died and the remaining 20 have been destroyed.
The birds apparently have been infected by new birds that were introduced into the flock. The fighting cock breeders in the district were asked to take appropriate biosecurity measures and report any suspected case.
An inspection and a census of the surrounding houses was conducted; 80 backyard birds and 20 fighting birds were found in a 200 m radius; these birds were confined and the owners have no contact with the outbreak.
A 10 km buffer zone was established around the outbreak. Training for small poultry farmers and fighting bird farmers was planned and coordination actions were taken for the vaccination of 2,000 birds, giving priority to fighting birds.
