Indian chicken lays country’s largest egg

10-06-2009 | |

A chicken in northern India has laid a giant egg weighing 162 grams, setting the national record, the Press Trust of India has reported.

A farm owner in the Indian state of Punjab told the news agency that the record holder is an unnamed 10-month-old Lohmann brown chicken who weighs 1.25 kilograms.

“This came as a surprise. In general, these chickens lay eggs weighing between 50 and 60 grams,” he said.

The egg is 10 centimetres long and has a diameter of 5 centimetres. The previous record – an egg weighing 160 grams – was set in 2003 in the state of Andhra Pradesh, according to the Limca Book of Records.

It is said the world’s largest chicken egg, which weighed 198 grams and was 9.4 centimetres long, was discovered in the Chinese province of Jiangshu.
