Business Update: New products and investments

New services, products, and investments have been launched on to the international poultry market recently. Where is the action and what is there to look out for? This concise overview gets you up to date.

Large investment in UAE’s poultry sector

Emirates Modern Poultry Co, based in the United Arab Emirates is investing AED120 million ($32.6 million) as an initial investment in a new poultry farm in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa area. Phase 1 of construction has already started and once running it is expected that it will reduce reliance on imported hatching eggs by 50%. The 5m2 million Liwa farm will house 6 hen houses with 7,000 birds in each.

The company, also known as Al Rawdah, is the first poultry farm in the UAE to receive the Halal certificate from Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), who said the investment is a further commitment to the UAE’s food security.

DSM launches new Egg Yolk Pigmentation Guidelines

DSM has launched its new Egg Yolk Pigmentation Guidelines and the addition of a new colour to YolkFan. YolkFan provides a simple means of measuring yolk colour and the addition of a new shade will help producers to cover the demand for highly pigmented yolks in markets like Japan and the Middle East. YolkFan has been developed from the DSM Yolk Colour Fan; recreating the original 15 colours with the addition of a deeper 16th shade. The new shade reflects the tendency towards a deeper yolk colour in several markets.

Dr David Nickell, VP of global marketing DSM Animal Nutrition & Health, said: “After 2 years of work and the re-creation of the entire yolk colour range, we are very proud to present the new fan and recommendations for a 16th shade of yolk colour. This development will be fundamental for protecting the investment of egg producers and their customers across the world.”

FarmGate doubles its small Christmas turkey production

FarmGate Hatcheries, a supplier of poults for traditional Christmas turkey production, are doubling output of their Super Mini Special poults following the success of the launch last year. The Super Mini Special has been bred to achieve hens that will meet the demand for 4kg (8.8 lb) oven-ready turkeys when grown to full maturity from 22 weeks plus.

The Super Mini Special has been developed from pure bronze-feathered male and female pedigree lines used in producing the company’s Tiny and Super Mini poults – an essential feature of the breeding programme. The company is offering a range of 6 different bronze and white breeds based on the Roly Poly, Wrolstad, Plumpy and Broad Breasted Bronze for achieving oven-ready weights of 3 to 11kg, with poults available from May to September.

Double honour for Kuipers Group in South Africa

Having won a Golden Comb Award in 2015, the Kuipers Group was honoured again when it achieved the top performing flock in the Cobb Europe, Middle East and Africa region. Commenting on the achievement, Theo Bezuidenhout, technical and sales manager for Cobb South Africa, stated: “This award recognises the quality of management of the Eagles Pride Koster Breeder team and it shows the genetic potential of the bird, given that there is constant genetic improvement year after year. With flocks like this, the cost of producing chicks is much lower and utilisation of hatchery capacity much more efficient.”

Evonik Industries has started basic engineering for the construction of a second world-scale production plant for the amino acid DL-methionine in Singapore. The plant complex, with a projected annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tons, is expected to come on stream in 2019. “We have supported the strong market growth of DL-methionine over the years by timely and needs-driven expansion of our production capacities, and we plan to continue doing this,” says Klaus Engel, Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik.

The new complex will be erected next to Evonik’s existing methionine plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, which was commissioned in late 2014. The product will be marketed under the MetAMINO brand name.
