Salmonella control highlighted at Kemin seminars

Kemin Industries provided educational seminars in Jakarta, Indonesia and Bangkok, Thailand recently focusing on salmonella control throughout the feed-to-food chain.  For the seminars in both Indonesia and Thailand, Dr Rick Carter technical services manager of Kemin Industries animal nutrition and health division in Asia, provided expert insights through presentation entitled: “Feed Hygiene and Salmonella – [a] Comprehensive, Integrated and Multiple Hurdle Approach.” This multiple hurdle approach called for controlling salmonella at all levels along the feed-to-food chain: raw materials, finished feed, feed mill equipment, and at the farm level. Seminar participants saw the increasing awareness of salmonella in Asian countries, hygiene requirements for exports, and some of the latest techniques and practices in Europe and Australia. Participants included breeders, integrators, commercial feed manufacturers and farm-level producers. The Jakarta and Bangkok seminars saw about 70 and 60 participants respectively.

IDT launches new poultry vaccine against Salmonella

Significant improvements in salmonella protection are claimed for a newly-launched poultry vaccine. Salmovac 440, gives earlier and stronger immunity which lasts longer than other salmonella vaccines, says Dr Daniel Windhorst, salmonella vaccine specialist with IDT Biologika, who launched the vaccine to the Great Britain and Northern Ireland markets at the British Pig and Poultry Fair in Warwickshire. Hysolv Animal Health will be marketing the vaccine in the UK and Ireland.  The UK launch marks the beginning of a series of Europe-wide launches.

The live vaccine is given orally through the water supply in a 3-dose regime that protects against both Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). It also protects against other SE strains and the newly-emerging monophasic Salmonella Typhimurium strains. The product has been approved for use by the British Egg Industry Council, which administers the Lion Code.
