China led world production of both duck meat and goose and guinea fowl meat in 2010, producing 68% and 95% of the total respectively, according to a recently released Agricultural Marketing Service report.

In 2010 world duck meat production totalled 4.031 million metric tons (MMT), +3% from 2009 (3.922 MMT) and +7% from 2008 (3.764 MMT). Goose and guinea fowl meat production totalled 2.407 MMT in 2010, +3% from 2009 (2.447 MMT) and +9% from 2008 (2.305 MMT).



China led world exports of duck meat with 45,239 MT in 2010, +51% from 2009 (29,867 MT) and +44% from 2008 (31,379 MT). Total world exports of duck meat in 2010 hit 153,539 MT, +21% from 2009 (126,735 MT) and +24% from 2008 (123,519 MT). Poland led world exports of goose and guinea fowl meat in 2010 at 15,903 MT, -14% from 2009 (18,485 MT) and +1% from 2008 (15,714 MT). Goose and guinea fowl exports worldwide totalled 32,768 MT in 2010, -35% from 2009 (50,665 MT) and -28% from 2008(45,664 MT).



The world leader of duck meat imports in 2010 was Hong Kong at 52,401 MT, +2% from 2009 (51,255 MT) and +9% from 2008 (48,247 MT). Worldwide imports of duck meat totalled 154,233 MT in 2010, +25% from 2009 (122,967 MT) and -1% from 2008 (155,345 MT). Germany was the top importer of goose and guinea fowl meatin 2010 at 23,658 MT, +31% from 2009 (18,038 MT) and +10% from 2008 (21,429 MT). Worldwide imports of goose and guinea fowl meat totalled 36,503 MT in 2010, +26% from 2009 (28,945 MT) and +17% from 2008 (31,309MT).



Chile opens market to US duck meat

On November 23, 2012 the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture (SAG) and USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Food Safety Inspection Service, and Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service finished negotiating the certificate language to export frozen and chilled poultry meat to include duck, opening a new market for US duck meat exports. Duck is considered a gourmet product amongst Chilean consumers.
