Bird flu confirmed in Yunlin, Taiwan

11-05-2012 | | |

As the number of chickens culled in Taiwan rises to 4,000 birds, the country’s agriculture authorities have confirmed H5N2 avian influenza as the cause.

The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine confirmed that HPAI was the cause behind the spate of mysterious chicken deaths; this new outbreak brings the total of H5N2 outbreaks signalled in Taiwan this year up to six.
The remaining chickens on the farm, Huang Kuo-ching, the deputy chief of the bureau, will be culled to halt the spread of the virus. No announcement has yet been made of the OIE, but Taiwan will perform standard procedures to confine the spread of the contagion.
This outbreak is the first to occur in the agricultural county of Yunlin, on Taiwan’s western seaboard.
