Ukraine bans poultry imports from China
The State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine (Gosvetfitosluzhba) has decided to ban imports of poultry, poultry products and raw material from several provinces of China due to recent outbreaks of avian influenza.
The first symptoms of the disease appeared in the northwestern autonomous region, Xinjiang Uygur on June 20, where the virus spread over 5,000 heads of chickens. Since then, it has killed more than 1,600 birds, according to data presented by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. Local authorities imposed a quarantine, and sterilised the area. In order to stop the spread of the virus more than 156,000 chickens were culled.
"The ban on poultry imports was introduced in Ukraine because of the message, received from the International Office of Epizootics (IOE). It was confirmed that the disease is the highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1. Taking into account this information, the Ukraine as from July 13 decided to ban the import of poultry from the Chinese provinces of Liaoning, Gansu, Tibet Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur and Ningxia of Hui region, as well as from the island of Taiwan" the head of Gosvetfitosluzhba, Vladimir Gorzheev, reported.
