Ukrainian egg producers await opening of the EU market

Ukrainian egg producers are waiting for the opening of the market of the European Union (EU) in May of this year. At this time the European Commission will unilaterally withdraw a number of trade tariffs, including for livestock products.

Egg exports to Europe will allow the large Ukraine holdings to combat the oversupply on the domestic market that have recently resulted in a drop of prices for the commodity.

Avangard and Ovostar Union,  two of the largest producers of eggs in Ukraine will undergo the certification process within two months, says the chairman of the board of directors of the association Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine, Alexander Bakumenko. This does not mean that agricultural holdings will immediately begin deliveries to the EU market, however, as buyers of Ukrainian eggs in Europe will also have to obtain a special license, the expert emphasises.

However, Ukrainian eggs will be quite competitive, thanks to drastically reduced prices. The cost of a dozen eggs in the country today is 9 hryvnia (US$0.68).

“This season will be difficult for large manufacturers. With the growth of the cost of eggs in Ukraine today, we have the world’s lowest selling prices, even less than in India. This has never happened before,” commented the owner of Avangard, Oleg Bakhmatyuk.
