Romania has become the latest country to record an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza.

The outbreak occurred near Seini, in the north west of the country close to the border with Hungary, where an outbreak was confirmed earlier in January.

Romanian authorities told the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that the outbreak had affected a flock of 18,000 birds on a commercial poultry farm.

A programme of culling will now take place on the farm, with movement restrictions in place to prevent spread.

It marks a further case in what appears to be a rapidly escalating series of outbreaks in eastern Europe. H5N8 has been found on a number of farms in Poland, in Hungary and in backyard birds in Slovakia.
