Poultry consumption in Bulgaria down
Poultry consumption in Bulgaria has gone down
by 23% over the first three months of 2006 as compared to the same period in the
previous year.
Ivan Angelov, chair of the Product Board for poultry and eggs, explained that
at present the producers are selling poultry for BGN 2,40 (€1.23), which does
not cover their investments to meet the European demands.
In his
words large amounts of poultry that have been collected because the bird flu
fears that hit the country in the beginning of the year has not been sold
yet.
Besides a drop in the poultry there is a decrease in the eggs'
prices, which is now BGN 0,07 to BGN 0,09 (€ 0.035 - € 0.046) per
egg.
Poultry consumption in the country is dropping despite the
efforts to stimulate the consumption through the "European chicken" campaign.
The campaign aims at teaching Bulgaria's people to eat healthy and mainly
poultry produced in the European Union.
