Bird flu projects supported by EU

08-10-2007 | |

The European Commission is to spend €27 million (US$39 million) on influenza research projects, including avian influenza research.

According to the EC, the new studies will be used to develop new diagnostics and drug targets, as well as models for the spread of a possible pandemic and the effects of preventative measures. The money will be distributed among 11 projects.
Other projects will focus on developing a nasal pandemic influenza vaccine, a portable test for detecting and monitoring the virus, and testing a new class of antivirals for humans.
