Saudi Arabia: 3.2 million birds culled due to AI

22-11-2007 | |

A total of 3.2 million birds on 10 farms in Saudi Arabia have been culled as a preventive measure to curb the spread of the H5N1 avian flu, said Agricultural Minister Fahd Balghunaim.

“Birds in seven farms in Riyadh where the virus was detected were culled. The chickens on another three farms were also culled because the farms are situated hazardously close to the farms where the virus appeared first,” said Balghunaim.
Farmers who have lost huge investments in the poultry sector due to the spread of avian influenza have been assured that they would be adequately compensated by the Agriculture Ministry.
The Minister, who attributed the outbreak to migratory birds, stated that the preventive measures adopted included the burning of infected poultry. Chicken feed was also burned and all the farms have been sanitised.
