China reported its 17th human fatality from the H5N1 virus yesterday. A man from the Jiangsu province in southern China became the latest victim.

The 24-year old man named simply as ‘Lu’ died on Sunday, according to the Jiangsu Provinicial Disease Control and Prevention Centre.

In a statement, the centre confirmed that the man had no known contact with dead poultry and no outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 virus had been reported in the province. 69 of his close contacts were put under medical observation for precautionary purposes.

China has fought a hard battle against sporadic outbreaks of the disease among its poultry with 26 human cases in total. The country has vowed an aggressive fight against H5N1, which has claimed the lives of 206 victims worldwide, according to the WHO.
