Bird flu dogs get to work at Dutch airport
Dutch customs at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands have deployed two special bird flu dogs to check flights from high-risk countries for poultry.
The dogs – a German shepherd named Bo and a Belgian shepherd named Judy – are checking flights from countries where the bird flu virus has been found, including China, Thailand, Egypt, Russia and Turkey.
The dogs are specially trained to sniff out all kinds of poultry, alive or dead, as well as feathers and eggs. In Europe, only the Czech customs are working with specialised bird flu dogs.
According to the customs service, this year, 1,626 kg prepared poultry meat, 203 kg raw poultry meat and 245 eggs have already been confiscated.
