Six held for smuggling poultry
Six people have been detained after trying to smuggle
chickens and ducks out of a remote region in north-eastern India following an
outbreak of bird flu.
“We have come across many reports of people loading their poultry into vans
and other modes of transport and shifting them to other places to escape
culling,†K Gopal, officer of the Animal Disease Control Programme.
After federal authorities confirmed dead chickens had tested positive for
bird flu, the Indian government banned the sale of
poultry.
"Anybody found violating the ban on sale or purchase of chicken or
transporting birds would be dealt with firmly," said an official, saying that
the six people from near Chenngmeirong violating this were taken into custody on
Friday.
