Land lease to Thai poultry firm, Pakistan unhappy

The Pakistan Poultry Association has pleaded with the government to stop leasing out land to foreign companies to start a poultry business in Pakistan.

This follows concerns of Chairman Shahid Mahmood that the government had signed an agreement with a Thai company to receive 66 acres of land on nominal lease rates to begin a poultry business in Pakistan. Shahid Mahmood said that the government had planned to give the Thai company other land on nominal lease rates being under the use of the Livestock Department for research and experiment purposes.
He said stakeholders of the Pakistani poultry industry agree that such an agreement will be discrimination with the local poultry industry.
“We are not against foreign investment in the country but domestic industry should be provided a level playing field with foreign investors,” Shahid said.
He added that the current volume of Pakistan’s poultry industry is Rs 140 billion (€1.7 billion). “There are 25,000 poultry farms in the country, generating employment and income for 1,200,000 people. Up to 30-40% of the total meat consumption is being procured from poultry products,” he added.
