Fourth swan tests positive for bird flu in UK
The UK environment ministry has reported that the
highly pathogenic strain of bird flu has been detected in a fourth dead swan in
southwest England.
On 10 January three swans were discovered dead having died from the deadly
H5N1 strain of
avian influenza. The outbreak occurred at Abbotsbury Swannery,
which is a reserve near Dorset.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says that another
mute swan collected on 11 January as part of wild bird surveillance from the
same area has tested positive for H5N1, however, there is apparently no evidence
to suggest widespread disease in the wild-bird population.
