Illegal NZ poultry farm shut down

24-06-2008 | |

An illegal poultry farm has been shut down in South Auckland. Representatives from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, police, Environment Waikato, Franklin District Council and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry together worked to ensure the closure.

Spokesman Justin Rowlands says it is essential that poultry and eggs are processed, stored and transported using good hygienic practices to minimise the presence of illness-causing bacteria.

During the two day operation more than 137,000 eggs at an estimated value of $21,000 were seized and destroyed. More than a thousand chickens, mainly broiler, were put down. The operator is likely to face numerous charges under the Animal Products Act 1999.
