Summer and heat stress

High mortality, decreased feed intake, lower than expected body weight gain, poor feed efficiency, reduction in egg production and poor eggshell quality are common adverse effects of heat stress often seen in meat-and egg-type poultry flocks.

Heat stress in commercial poultry farms is again at the center of attention, and for this reason I thought it would be a good time to briefly talk about heat stress.
High mortality, decreased feed intake, lower than expected body weight gain, poor feed efficiency, reduction in egg production and poor eggshell quality are common adverse effects of heat stress often seen in meat-and egg-type poultry flocks.
The magnitude of heat stress-related problems may vary from region to region and from one farm to another (in the same region). These effects may not even be the same in different barns and a farm. There is no doubt that temperature itself is a determining factors, but farm structure (house design, ventilation system, stocking density, etc) and the way that farm Management / staff handle heat stress are also important and can affect the outcome of this problem. Additionally, birds - depending on type and stage of production - react differently to heat stress conditions. You may not expect to encounter similar adverse effects in a 4-week-old broiler flock and a 40-week-old broiler breeder flock.
There are many publications on how we can reduce or minimize adverse effects of heat stress on birds in commercial poultry operations. Strategies such as temporary feed restriction or feeding at specific times of the day, increasing density of nutrients in diet (because feed intake decreases during heat stress), providing birds with extra electrolytes and vitamin (especially through drinking water), and changing the lighting program may all be helpful inManaging heat stress-induced problems in poultry. It is always recommended to provide birds with cool water, but I am not sure how this can happen when the temperature is 50A ° C.

    Having raised broilers over the last 4 years I recently discovered that inspite of a good feed intake the birds did not gain much weight ; at 40 days it was just hovering at 2 kg.The temperature was at around 29c.What could possibly be wrong? Mortality was at 0.7%

    very good article.. I am owning a 50000 bird layer farm with babcock chicks... I think heat stress can be managed by 2 ways... external(close the curtains , stop the outside air and use foggers to decrease temp at constant level... i try to maintain it around 35 degree). internal ( feed : increase energy to 2475, decrease protein, increase amino acids ie lycine, methonine... and topdressing of electrolyte and .5 times ab2d3k and B complex...!!!!!!

    50 C temperature is very common in Pakistan during summer days and keeping the water temperature lower is very difficult in this situation as normally the water tanks are located at the roof. Some people use double walled container filled with insulator to avoid the heating of water and use the commercial blocks of ice which is hectic and expensive work but I recommend to use compressors attached to the water tanks which is good choice I think. It is also suggested to insulate the water lines outside the house as insulation is not common in countries where temperature does not fall below 0C in winters.
    In my experience if the birds face temperature stress from the start, they are more resistant to heat stress as compared to those receive heat stress for short period. I think broilers grow faster in later ages are more sensitive to heat stress as compared to those which have a straight growth curve.

    wind speed + evaporativ cooling by mean of disk cooler, foggers or pad are the best method to get good results with production cost at their highest level.
    Feed withdrawal, supplementation of electrolytes as sodium bicarbonate to prevent alkhalosis and water cooling are emergency measures.
    A bird panting panting costs you 500calories / hour.

    I have been working in a grower section responsible for the chicks(babcocks,borris brown,highline maria, julia, isa white etc.) before bringing it to the laying section. With regards to the variety of birds except borris brown it is difficult for me manage the increase of feed intake during summer. since the weight monitoring system is concerned I tried different strategies but it did work will. I have given fresh water on bird from the specified time except extra light. is it advisable to increase light wihtout affecting the mortality of the bird? Thank you.

    At high ambient temperatures prevalent in most of Asian countries including India, bird has to rely on panting for controlling body temperature that will consume energy resulting in reduced feed efficiency. Betaine is of immense help in such heat stress conditions since it is an osmolyte, maintaining cellular water and ion balance. Adding Betaine is highly cost-effective solution that will significantly reduce heat stress and enhance profitability.     To alleviate the negative effect of heat stress in broilers and layers we can incorporate chromium (cr) in the diet.
    Cr acts as a insulin potentiator and thus have a essential role in carbohydrate(glucose), lipid and protein metabolism.
    Cr acts in the molecular level to nullify heat stress..it also decreaes the corticotrophin level in the body. During heast stress there is loss of minerals from the body. Cr improves the mineral retention in the body and hence maintains the vital functions in the body. Cr also improves the immuinity, body weight gain, FCR, egg production, egg quality.
