Poultry course offered at Scottish Agric College

The Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) has launched a new Higher National Certificate (HNC) course in poultry production.

The HNC Poultry Production course aims at meeting the demands and requirements for employment in the poultry industry, says Lorraine Hannah, lecturer/adviser of studies. It has also been designed to prepare for further vocational training to develop and advance a career in this sector.
The course is structured over one year of full-time study, or can also be taken on a part-time basis. It includes lectures, practical classes and tutorials, with farm/industry visits.
There are 12 mandatory course units, covering the range of skills and knowledge needed by today’s poultry industry:
•  Poultry Meat Production Systems
•  Poultry Egg Production Systems
•  Poultry Health
•  Poultry Welfare and Behaviour
•  Poultry Nutrition and Feed Formulation
•  Avian Physiology
•  Production and Incubation of Hatching Eggs
•  Poultry Buildings and Mechanisation
•  Pollution and Waste Management – an Introduction
•  Business Management – an Introduction
•  Information Technology Applications Software 1
•  Graded Unit (project)
