Togo bird flu outbreak is H5N1
Tests have revealed that the first ever outbreak of
bird flu in Togo in western Africa is the virulent H5N1 strain of the
virus.
The virus was detected at a poultry farm in Agbata outside the capital,
Lome, housing over 4,500 birds.
According to the World Health Organisation, at least 235 people have died
of bird flu worldwide since 2003.
It is reported in Togo that the lab tests were carried out by experts in
Ghana and Italy after the outbreak was discovered last week.
