Chinese baby contaminated with H9N2
A baby from the Chinese city Shenzhen has been contaminated with a mild version of bird flu, the virus type H9N2. It has been detected when the baby was in Hong Kong.
It is not sure how the baby got contaminated. Since 1999, this baby is the fifth case of a H9N2 contamination. The earlier four cases are all fully recovered. Three weeks ago, bird flu was detected in poultry in Hong Kong. All 30,000 animals have been culled.
Scientists already warned for the bird flu virus type H9N2 in August 2008. They said it can also transmit to humans. On a global scale, scientists primarily keep an eye on the virus type H5N1, which can cause a worldwide epidemic.
