France: Low path bird flu outbreak

19-11-2009 | |

France’s agriculture authorities have reported an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza (H5) in a farm in Saint Aubin du Plain with 9,000 ducks, ready to be force-fed.

Reports state that the birds did not show clinical signs.

The outbreak was identified through active surveillance for avian influenza in breeding farms. It showed that the virus has not circulated from the farm (no epidemiological related farm nor other farms in a 1 km radius area).

All 9,000 ducks will be euthanized and destroyed. Cleaning and disinfection measures will be applied, followed by a 21-day sanitation process. Newly introduced birds will be monitored during 21 days following their introduction into the farm.
