India: Meat & Poultry Processing Board launched
The Indian government has recently launched a National Meat and Poultry Processing Board, reports state.
Minister for Food Processing Industries, Subodh Kant Sahai, said that the apex body will work as a national hub for addressing all key issues related to meat and poultry processing sector for the systematic and proper development of this sector.
The constitution of the apex body was long overdue, he said, adding that the National Meat and Poultry Processing Board will be an autonomous body initially be funded by the government for 2 years, managed by the industry itself.
It is reported that the Board will have 19 members including CEO of the Board with 9 members as ex-officio members. Of these, 3 members will represent Central Ministries, 4 shall be drawn from the state governments, and 2 will be drawn from training/research institutes involved in the meat sector.
"The Board would serve as a single window service provider for producers/manufacturers and exporters of meat and meat products for promoting and regulating the meat industry as a whole. It would result in large number of employment opportunities and would also help the rural farmers by increasing their income," said Sahai.
