Brazil’s largest poultry entity formed

The Brazilian Poultry Association (União Brasileira de Avicultura – UBA) and the Brazilian Chicken Producers and Exporters Association (Associação Brasileira dos Produtores e Exportadores de Frangos – ABEF) have agreed to merge the 2 entities to create the Brazilian Poultry Raising (União Brasileira de Avicultura – UBABEF), setting up the Brazilian poultry industry’s largest entity.

The directorship, elected unanimously, has Francisco Turra as Executive President and 3 Directors of Nuclei: Ariel Antônio Mendes (Production and Technical-Scientific Matters), Ricardo Santin (Markets) and José Perboyre (Administrative and Financial).

According to reports, the Brazilian poultry industry in 2009 traded an amount equivalent to R$32,367 bln, including amounts for the production and export of meat, eggs and the consumption of inputs such as corn and soy meal.

Structure

The structure of UBABEF will include 12 Sectoral Chambers: Domestic Market, International Markets, Production, Animal Health and Public Health, Eggs, Poultry Breeders, Day-Old Chicks and Hatching Eggs, Biological Inputs, Feed, Poultry Farm Equipment, Legislative and Tax Matters, State-level Entities and Sustainability.

The new entity will have an Advisory Board made up of representatives from the State entities, from sectoral entities, from agribusinesses and from society, and a Board of Direct Counsel which will also draw on broad representation from the poultry industry.

Representativeness

UBA was created in 1963 to represent the Brazilian poultry industry within the Federal Government, in the National Congress and in the Judicial Branch. ABEF was founded in 1976 in order to boost Brazilian poultry exports. Their shared goal of fostering the development of the national poultry industry led Brazil to become the world’s largest exporter and third-largest producer.

The new entity arising out of this merger has several associates including the Brazilian Association of Chick Producers (Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Pintos de Corte – APINCO), the APINCO Foundation for Poultry Science and Technology (Fundação Apinco de Ciência e Tecnologia Avícola – FACTA) and the National Association of Equipment Manufacturers for Poultry and Pork Industries (Associação Nacional dos Fabricantes de Equipamentos para Aves e Suínos – ANFEAS).

There are also all the state-level associations, genetic breeding facilities, broiler and egg producing companies, slaughterhouses, turkey breeders, input producers and service providers.

Objectives

UBABEF CEO, Francisco Turra, says that from this point on activities regarding the domestic and overseas markets will be concentrated within a single entity.

“Harnessing our synergies, we will enhance measures carried out to boost the expansion of poultry production, with health and quality, and extend the presence of Brazilian chicken in international trade,” says Turra.

Another focal point for the activities of UBABEF will be to overturn myths that still persist about poultry production, such as the accusations of using hormones in the raising of chickens.

“We will work to dispel this myth. And prove that Brazilian chicken is the healthiest and most sustainable type of animal protein in the world,” Turra promises.
