Pakistan: Government raids poultry association offices

The offices of the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) in Islamabad and Lahore were the scene of two government raids carried out by two inspection teams of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP).

A number of documents were confiscated to probe allegations of cartelisation for fixing prices of poultry feed, according to a statement issued by the commission.

The CCP received an email from Afghanistan’s  ministry of commerce and industry in July, informing the former about the potential anti-competitive behaviour within the poultry industry in Pakistan.

The commission was also informed that Pakistan Poultry Association was acting as a collective business agent for several poultry companies in Pakistan.

The Afganistan ministry’s letter also indicates that PPA may have been engaged in representing Pakistan’s poultry operations domestically and abroad.

However, the CCP said that the officials at the premises of Pakistan Poultry Association fully cooperated with the inspecting team by offering complete access to all documents and materials during the search/inspection procedure.
The commission had already imposed a penalty of Rs50 million (€405,000) on the PPA in 2010 for cartelisation in various poultry markets.
