New perspectives for Cumberland Poultry

Cumberland Poultry is happy with its new overhead ownership. Under its parent company GSI Group, the Assumption, IL based company is now officially part of AGCO Corporation in Atlanta, GA since December 1, 2011.

“We had two excellent private equity owners during the past eight years. That said, it feels great to finally be part of a true agricultural company that has a genuine understanding of the workings in our industries and has a long term view of them”, says Al Deutsch, President of the Global protein division of GSI. In this position, Deutsch is also responsible for Cumberland Poultry. AGCO is specialised in farm machinery with leading brands such as Massey Ferguson and Fendt tractors and implements. Through the acquisition of GSI Group, they now also own Hired Hand, Cumberland Poultry, Automated Production Systems for swine and GSI Grain Systems.

“Cumberland has grown considerably on the global market already in recent years”, says Deutsch. “Traditionally, we have been strong in the Americas, with the focus on our home market USA of course. But in recent years, also regions like Asia have become very important for Cumberland. Southeast Asian sales have more than tripled and China sales have grown by 25x in the last four years. They are on pace to continue to grow rapidly.

But in Europe we are still lacking market share. This is logical because it’s home to many long standing and quality competitors. Yet we think that through AGCO we may be able to also get better access to this market. After all, AGCO has a strong distribution network all across Europe and we expect that we can benefit from that. The AGCO network is targeting large scale professionals and through some of their selected dealerships we think that it will be possible to gain share in Europe. Such dealerships will most likely also be able to serve our customers in a region. Our products will fit. It’s a matter of finding the right formula to link to their network. We have confidence that we will be able to do so.”
