US Poultry sector continues to thrive

The US poultry industry continues to thrive, recording an 11% increase in economic output over the past 2 years.

Industry figures released this week show the poultry industry has created an additional 302,515 jobs that since the last study was conducted in 2016.

Overall statistics released by the US Poultry and Egg Association, National Chicken Council, National Turkey Federation and United Egg Producers Show the sector now provides 1,984,784 jobs, $108.9 billion in wages, $495.1bn in economic activity and $38.5bn in government revenue.

The study, according to industry sources, highlights the positive impact the industry has on jobs, wages and federal and state revenue in the USA.

John Starkey, US Poultry president, said: “We are pleased to continue providing this valuable tool across the industry that show the positive economic impact the poultry industry has on our nation and our communities.”

The research has been broken down into sub-categories – chicken (poultry meat), turkey and eggs. Key data for each sector shows:

* The poultry meat industry provides 1.39m jobs, $76.5bn in wages, $347bn in economic activity and $27bn in government revenue.

* The turkey industry provide 441,000 jobs, $24.1bn in wages, $109.5bn in economic activity and $8.5bn in government revenue.

* The egg industry provides 112,000 jobs, $6.3bn in wages, $29.2bn in economic activity and $2.3bn in government revenue.

Mike Brown, National Chicken Council president, said: “We know that chicken is nutritious, affordable and versatile but chicken also means jobs – whether it’s on the farm, in the processing plant, the transportation sector, manufacturing, retail or restaurants.

“Chicken producers’ positive economic impact stretches from coast to coast, hits every sector of the US economy and is felt in every congressional district.”

United Egg Producers said the sector continued to be an integral part of the nation’s economy.

“Egg producers, along with the companies that provide supplies and materials to the industry, provide well paying jobs in the country and pay significant amounts in tax to state and federal governments,” it said in a statement.
