France to introduce new country of origin labelling

New legislation could mean restaurants and caterers have to prominently declare where meat was both raised and slaughtered.

A previous law passed obliged supermarkets and butcheries to declare the origin of beef products.

The new decree, which is yet to pass European and French parliamentary procedures, could see that rule extended to pork, lamb and poultry.

If approved by France’s food unions, it will be presented to the European Commission before being forwarded to France’s council of state.

The new measures could come into effect as soon as April next year, if parties are in agreement.
