Launch of Zoetis-British Poultry Council Trainee Award
Anyone training for a career in the poultry industry – either if they work on a farm, in a hatchery or with game – can enter the 2018 Zoetis-British Poultry Council Trainee Award.
The award, which includes a £2,000 training grant from Zoetis and a £500 cash prize from Poultry World, has been won in the past by employees working with chickens, turkeys and ducks as well as from commercial broilers and pedigree breeding stock.
Gaining the award is a significant step in progressing with a career in the poultry industry, which is responding to the Apprentice Levy by creating new Apprenticeship Standards to utilise the levy funding. The award has always been based on employees doing work place training, and under the new scheme apprentices undertake a work based diploma.
James Porritt, Zoetis poultry manager in the UK and Ireland, said: “We have made some changes in the form to reflect current issues in the industry. One of them is the need to improve public perception and this is an opportunity for those fairly new to the industry to have their say.
“Poultry is an industry with tremendous career opportunities and we have seen the way that past winners have progressed into more managerial roles. We need to broaden the appeal of the industry to young people as well as showing consumers generally the care that goes into producing poultry meat and eggs.”
Last year’s winner was Polish hatchery worker Klaudia Roszkowska, who came to the UK in 2005, joined Cargill Meats Europe at its Shobdon hatchery, near Hereford, five years later and now has a technical role focusing on improving hatchery performance and efficiency.
The award judges – James Porritt, Poultry World editor Jake Davies and Lisa Smith and Shraddha Kaul of the BPC – will choose three finalists and decide on the winner after interviews. The finalists will attend the BPC annual awards ceremony in the House of Commons on Tuesday 4 December when the winner will be announced.
