Animal fat and slaughter waste in animal feed

20-11-2007 | |

SNIV, the French meat industry association, is calling for the permission to use animal fat and slaughter waste in animal feed to counteract the crisis ensuing from soaring feed prices.

“There are two reasons for reopening the discussion on animal feed – one is economic – the high costs of meat production is taking its toll on the livestock industry”, commented the SNIV. In addition, the chance of BSE is lower these days.

The SNIV has based its arguments on advice from Afassa – the natural products research organisation in three continents – Africa, Asia and South America.

The meat industry, however, is in favour of strict regulations regarding the usage of such waste products in animal feed. For example, the use of bonemeal from carcasses, they believe, should remain banned.
