Egyptian boy contracts bird flu

An Egyptian toddler has contracted bird flu. This brings the total amount of recorded cases since the first outbreak of the disease in the country in 2006 to 61.

The 2-year-old was taken to hospital with a fever on Mondayafter he had been exposed to dead fowl thought to have been infected with the virus.

Investigation

In Egypt, a total of 23 people have died from the avian influenza virus, and it is reported that a significant number of the victims are children. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently called for an investigation into why this is the case.
