An Egyptian toddler has contracted bird flu. This brings the total amount of recorded cases since the first outbreak of the disease in the country in 2006 to 61.

The 2-year-old was taken to hospital with a fever on Mondayafter he had been exposed to dead fowl thought to have been infected with the virus.

In Egypt, a total of 23 people have died from the avian influenza virus, and it is reported that a significant number of the victims are children. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently called for an investigation into why this is the case.
