Vietnam: bird flu victim, struggle against cull

10-02-2009 | |

The second human bird flu infection this year has been reported in Vietnam. Meanwhile, villagers attack officials in a struggle against the culling procedure.

The Examiner reports that while officials tried to eliminate approx. 1,500 infected chickens, more than 100 villagers attacked them. The officials were busy placing infected birds into a pit to be burned.

Further reports state that the infected birds were smuggled into the country from China.

Officials tried to explain to the villagers of the Thuong Tin district just outside Hanoi that the birds were not edible, but they apparently paid no attention, overwhelming the health officials and running off with birds they could grab.
